If you've ever shopped for railings, you've heard the term 'marine-grade aluminum.' Sales reps throw it around. Spec sheets mention it. But what does it actually mean? And how do you know if your supplier is delivering it?
The alloy: 6063-T6 is the standard
Marine-grade aluminum for architectural railings almost always means alloy 6063-T6. The '6063' is the alloy composition — primarily aluminum with controlled amounts of magnesium and silicon. The '-T6' is the temper, indicating it's been heat-treated and artificially aged for optimal strength.
Why this alloy? It extrudes cleanly (so we can make complex profiles), takes finish well (anodize and powder-coat both bond properly), and resists corrosion in marine environments. The magnesium-silicon composition is what creates the natural oxide layer that prevents rust.
What 'marine-grade' actually means in service
- Salt-laden coastal air (Halifax, Vancouver Island, oceanfront everywhere) — no pitting for decades
- Quebec freeze-thaw cycles — no cracking, no spalling, dimensionally stable to -40°C and +60°C
- UV exposure — the anodize layer doesn't degrade in sunlight (powder-coat finishes can fade — see below)
- Pool deck chemistry (chlorine, bromine) — handles it fine; stainless hardware required
- De-icing salts on terrace decks — minor surface staining only, no structural impact
Where lower-quality suppliers cut corners
Cheaper aluminum railing systems sometimes use alloy 6005 or 6061 instead of 6063. These are stronger but harder to extrude cleanly and don't anodize as evenly. The result: railings with visible extrusion lines, inconsistent finish color, and slightly more corrosion in coastal environments.
Even worse, some import suppliers use 'aluminum' that's actually a die-cast aluminum alloy with high zinc content. It looks identical until it's been outdoors for 18 months and starts forming white surface deposits. By then the warranty period is over and you have a building covered in failing railings.
How to verify what you're getting
Ask your supplier for a mill certificate (also called a 'cert of analysis') for the extrusion lot used on your project. It should show the alloy designation (6063), temper (T6), and the source mill. Reputable suppliers can produce these on request. If they hem and haw, that's your answer.
