    Handrail compliance is one of the most-failed inspection items on commercial and multi-family residential projects. The specifications are detailed, the inspectors are strict, and the cost of getting it wrong is high. This guide covers everything an architect needs to specify correctly the first time.

    Graspable profile requirements

    ADA-compliant handrails must have a graspable profile. For round profiles, that means 1¼ inch to 2 inch diameter (32mm to 51mm). For non-round profiles (square, oval, D-shape), the perimeter must be between 4 inches and 6¼ inches (100mm to 160mm), and the maximum cross-section dimension must be no more than 2¼ inches (57mm).

    What this rules out: 2x4 wood top rails (too wide), thin metal flat bars (not graspable), thick decorative profiles (too wide). What it allows: round or oval tubing 1.25–2 inch, properly sized D-profiles, and flat handrails within the perimeter limits.

    Mounting height

    Handrails for stairs and ramps must be mounted at 34–38 inches (864–965mm) above the stair nosing or ramp surface. The height must be consistent for the entire run — don't let height creep on stair landings.

    End extensions — the most-missed requirement

    Handrails must extend horizontally at least 12 inches (305mm) beyond the top stair nosing, and continue parallel to the floor or sloped landing for 12 inches at the bottom. These extensions allow people with mobility limitations to grip the handrail before stepping onto the stair.

    Inspectors check this religiously. We see general contractors order handrails sized to the stair only and have to send them back to add extensions. Always include the extensions in the original order.

    Wall clearance

    The handrail must have a minimum 1½ inch (38mm) clearance from the wall it's mounted to. This allows the hand to wrap fully around the rail without scraping knuckles on the wall. Use proper standoff brackets — don't try to save money with flush-mount brackets.

    Continuous runs — no breaks at landings

    Handrails must be continuous through the full length of the stair, including through landings. Many older buildings have handrails that stop at each landing and restart at the next stair run. That's no longer compliant. We fabricate continuous handrails with welded landing-to-stair returns, then ship them as single pieces to avoid field joints.
